My Uggs: No I didn't win them (dammit)

You may have noticed an Ugg boot promo (non-paid) on my blog recently. I was hoping to win a pair of Uggs to give them as a Christmas gift to my niece.

Believe me I was not an Ugg fan -- far from it. At the university where I work, it pained me to watch perfectly attractive young women parade past the reference desk in those shapeless clubfeet. What is up? This generation watched Sex in the City in their formative years. They should be wearing Manolo Blahniks, but they're clad in Uggs -- the footwear equivalent of a moo-moo. Forget shape, forget style, just sew around the edges.

The Aha! moment
When I was home over Christmas, my niece got Uggs (from someone else, not me). She compelled me to try them on. What can I say? The holidays had softened my resolve. I put my feet in her chestnut suede Uggs.

As a connoisseur of comfortable shoes, I'm not easily impressed -- I've known the pleasure of the Ariat footbed, the Naot cork soles, and Dansko clog. Yet as I eased into the cocoon of lambswool I confess my feet soared to a new level of pedal comfort. Am I wearing boots or are my legs resting on pillows? I couldn't tell. Never MIND that they are not waterproof. Never MIND that they have no traction. Never MIND that they pick up dirt and are hard to clean.

Ahh, feel the love...
Pictured left/above are my feet in their club-footed comfortfest -- my new Pewter Uggs. I ordered them from Ebay from a seller in China (where ironically the Australian Uggs are manufactured). About half -price. My colleagues laugh at me, I look like a circus clown, but I care not. If your feet feel good, you almost always have a good day.

Or should I say, G'day!

  1. I worked at the Magic Kingdom for several years and one of my most disturbing memories is of a grown man wearing shorts and turquoise Uggs. In July. I'm not sure I can get past it. :) I live in Ariat clogs, myself.

  2. Warm would make my feet happy. I don't worry too much how they look as long as they are warm....Never tried Uggs, however. They do look tempting and sound so in the warm kind of way I so adore.

  4. I'm totally for comfort over style. If my feet hurt, my brain shuts down and my body no longer works. I might just have to try out of a pair of these to see if they will fit the bill for me.

  10. For riders, I've found the perfect answer to this fleece lined boot quandary. http://www.doversaddlery.com/product.asp?pn=X1-38752&cn=2996&bhcd2=1265443224 Meet the Middleburg Fleece-Lined Tall boot. SUPER SUPER comfy, warm and cozy and goes from around town to the barn. I love, love, love them and I've got lots of compliments on them from horse and non-horse people alike. With "equestrian" fashion so in these days, I really suggest looking at these before biting the bullet and buying Uggs!

  11. I fought it for so long... but now I adore them. I did just upgrade to a pair of North Face Bella Alta boots (similar cozy insides, but waterproof with good traction), which are far more practical for winter wear. On dry days though, I still love my uggs.

  13. I could care less what young women wear on their feet. The tramp stamps are far worse. If you want to see footwear abused, browse the gallery of eccentricity known as www.peopleofwalmart.com

  14. Well, I'm an Aussie and while they're not the most attractive article of footwear you'll ever own, they are the cosiest and most snuggly when the weather gets cold.

We don't really need anything this warm Down Under as it never gets terribly cold but I'd have thought that folks in the northern hemisphere for whom snow is the norm, these would be standard wardrobe items.

I'd never wear my ugg boots out anywhere (although people do) but they're great for getting around the house in so well done you for donning possibly THE most comfortable footwear you'll ever own.

P.S. I have no affiliations with any ugg boot manufacturers : ) and yes, it's ironic you can buy them cheaper from China but everything's cheaper from China!!

  15. I'm with you on the shapeless clubfoot thing. Although I've never tried them on. Maybe that's where I went wrong!

  16. Yes you are supposed to wear UGGs without socks. The fleece molds to your foot. This is true of real fleece. I imagine that imitation fleece in imitation UGGs would not work as well.
