I didn't know Cleveland Bays were actually on an endangered breed list. The Cleveland Bay horse one of the rarest horsesand is on the American Livestock Breed Conservancy's "Critical" list." Only 125 purebred Cleveland Bays are in the U.S. Isn't this one lovely?

When I was still a child, I had a horse breed book and the Cleveland Bay was my favorite. Looking at this guy go, I guess I had pretty good taste back then. *G*
ReplyDeletebeautiful horse! I'd love to know what other breeds are on the critical list...
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful but as a carriage horse, I guess there's not a great deal of interest in them in the U.S. Pity because they can do so much more. Lovely bone on them!
ReplyDeleteI remember reading about the Cleveland Bays in my horse books but I didn't know they were so rare either.
ReplyDeleteThe Friesian breed was very close to extinction and look at them now.
he is gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI met a lady in WA that events a Cleveland Bay/TB cross at Prelim. He's an amazing horse and totally made me want one.
ReplyDeleteI think these guys are so beautiful, and such a link to the past. More people need to drive classic, sound, solid-boned carriage horses and less need to drive nitwitted head-in-the-air fancy action breeds, in my (not very) humble opinion.
ReplyDeleteOne of my favorite riding instructors from my childhood owned and competed a Cleveland Bay. "Pirate" was tall, gorgeous and had a tail of black waves that reached the ground. He was also gentle and clearly adored her. I remember watching her canter him and I was taken aback by his power. I did not know that these horses were rare, but now that you mention it, "Pirate" is the only Cleveland Bay that has crossed my path outside of picture books. I hope the breed can be revived.
ReplyDeleteWow, what a beautiful horse!
ReplyDeleteI love the Cleveland bay!!
ReplyDeleteThe horse I fell head over heels in love with was a 4 year old Cleveland Bay that was given to my trainer at the time because he kept jumping out of his paddock. It took a month to get him to figure out how to walk under saddle and once he knew what you were asking for he would try to give it to you 110%. I have not met one since but am a huge fan forever!
ReplyDeleteI see CBxTB crosses for sale all the time...and want one quite badly. There are a couple of nice stallions on the west coast and I just noticed one of them is for sale! Someone buy him...I know you want to!
ReplyDeleteI was very lucky to be able to ride a Cleveland Bay for a little while. Such a great, substantial horse with an excellent brain! He really was one of a kind and it's a shame there's not more of them out there.
ReplyDeleteI have CB/X she a star in my eyes, after quite few years of hard work her dressage is so big and powerful now.
ReplyDeleteShe adores my mum and me, and is always waiting at the gate when I go to ride her. Her name is Mississippi.
She has already had one foal, i hope to breed in few years, so there will hopefully be a few more CB/X in New Zealand
The Cleveland bay is one of England oldest and rarest breeds but the exmoor pony also a native of the uk is also on the endangered list to!
ReplyDeleteThey are also very strict with registering the Clevelands to here is the breed standards link
