Bob and I have our tix to Rolex, and I read with some dismay that Rolex will sell parking spots on the perimeter of the cross country course for tailgating.
Oh. Great. Drunk people. Bad behavior. Loud music. Not watching the event. Not letting other people watch the event.
Dear Lord please don't let this ruin the best day of the four days of competition!

Wow. I have never tailgated at a horse competition. I have sat down and had a beer while watching, but never tailgated. Seems kind of, umm, tacky. :P
ReplyDeleteWell, maybe the fans attracted to the event will not be the beer drinking, noisy, annoying kind, but a huge group of wine, cheese and proper behavior horsepeople.
ReplyDeleteOne can only hope.
I don't figure it will be any more wild than a typical box party at a horse show. It's kind of an expensive ticket (and obscure) to waste it on getting blitzed.
ReplyDeleteWell, you can hope for "Radnor Hunt" rather than "Penn State football game" style tailgating. When I was a kid, I used to go watch polo matches at a local park. I went to see the horses (of course) but I remember the tailgating too, and it was top drawer--fancy cars, caviar and champagne! Cross your fingers.
ReplyDeleteThe tailgating at the St. Louis Charity horseshow is nice. Less drunken football fans, more eating deviled eggs outside. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm awaiting an email telling me I have been chosen as a volunteer for Rolex next year....if so - seeing tailgating will be interesting, needless to say.
ReplyDeleteFrom the past postings...will you be putting together a meet and greet?? Would love to finally meet you in person:)
Jess, I don't believe it - that's EXACTLY what I was going to say!!! Where are you? I live & work right down the street from the NEC and hardly ever miss the G.P. at the Charity. When I lessoned at Irish Fox I'd do their tailgate, now I'm just an average bystander (but when I say hi to my IFS friends I'll snag a couple hors d'oeuvres :-). I didn't go this year because my friend called and said a pall had been cast over the event by a girl being severely injured during the warmup.
ReplyDeleteANYWAY, yes, our tailgates here are extremely respectable. That is admittedly, a small event nowhere near the scale of Rolex. However, I grew up in NJ and every year we tailgated at a giant steeplechase event there. I'm sure some adults overimbibed (inc. my own parents, I still remember my mother hitting another car in the parking area one time) but it was definitely a classy affair, with real silver, tablecloths, fancy food and the like. I certainly hope that Rolex is more like that than "KY Derby infield." :-/ The crowd on X-country day at WEG was quite well-behaved so here's hoping...
Well, darn it, I forgot that I had to post as Anonymous. Jess, my name is Tracie!
