Young stallion alert: Jeeves, bring me my drool cup!

Between the music and this footage, I'm jazzed. The young stallion Darlington is by Don Frederico. I love the way the music changes as the canter work starts, and check out the walk. He has a skinny little hiney (sp?) but he can sure work it.

  1. Oh my, he's nice! And he's only three....hope he stays sound. I always worry when I see a horse that young going so "ungreen," if you know what I mean. Babies don't get to be babies when they have that kind of talent, I guess.

  2. He does have a strange rear end but I love that he doesn't flip his toes in the extended trot. He's a pretty mover. :)

  3. He's a nice horse. I don't think that is in question.

I think this video is age-inappropriate for him, and I tend to dislike that this is what people want to see. He's definitely pushing rather than lifting, as you expect at this age/level of training you expect for the age. This head carriage really is a frame for him, not a higher head carriage because of bent hocks and sitting which wouldn't really be so correct at this age.

I think he looks like he's worked in a way I would prefer to see him work, though. His muscling looks like what I want to see from a young horse who has been working long and lower, building up strength - I would *love* to see a non-promotional video of his daily work!

But he is a very lovely horse and lovely mover. Hopefully he'll do well and you'll get to post more about him in the future, telling us about him! I don't know how young horses who look like him now tend to develop in the future, so am trying to catch up with horses, check out their pasts, etc.

  5. Hot, Hot, Hawt! It does kinda look like he got a Thoroughbreds hinny and a warmbloods front end though eh? Love the music too :)

  6. Wow I had no idea he was three! I wonder if his haunches will improve with age . . .

Is it normal for a three year old to already be doing extended gaits? What age was he started??

  7. I was glad to hear I wasn't the only person questioning his age vs experience ratio. He may be sizzling hot, but how many injections is he going to require by age 7? Poor thing is gonna be in poultices all the time and require ceramic blankets.

Talent is great when it is used responsibly. I thought those Europeans didn't like to start the WBs until age 4-5 ... and even then ... long and low work only.

Hmm. Well, if this guy stays sound, then he would be a good stud, conformation-wise ... because he would prove to ME that he is built for the hard jobs ...

  8. You and I have very similar taste in horses, Stacey. I always love the ones you pick out. This guy is going to be amazing, he's a natural. I love that he's so relaxed and loose while he works. His butt is kind of puny right now, that's true, but I'm sure it will fill out with time as he matures and finishes growing. Definitely one to keep an eye on!
