Last year this pair Vicki and Amanda Wilson -- did an amazing Puissance demonstration at this New Zealand horse show. This year, they rode saddle and bridle-less, and for the record, the palomino is not exactly dead broke. The pony is pretty young, kind of green, and absolutely beautiful.

That looks incredibly insane... and incredibly fun!
ReplyDeleteI personally love riding bareback! As a kid the only times I rode in a saddle was when I had a lesson or a Pony Club meeting. Even now I ride bareback (but with a bareback pad)from time to time. I honestly feel just as secure in the bareback pad as I do in a saddle. I've been through major spooks (the OMG the tractor is going to eat me spook) and I don't lose my balance any more than in the saddle. For long rides I know it's definitely more comfortable for my horse & I to ride in the saddle but when I just want to poke around the farm or go a 1/2 mile down the road I chose bareback.
ReplyDeleteAlways glad that it's not my car. *G*
ReplyDeleteThose riders have wonderful bareback seats, that's for sure. No need for a saddle search in their world. *lol*
Superb skills and amazing courage! But, one has to wonder, per previous discussions on the blog about saddle fit and back discomfort, whether doing this kind of riding and jumping w/o human weight pressure evenly distributed ...
ReplyDelete... is causing back problems for the horses. Hmm.
One other thing. I hope those horses are on some really good joint supplements. Yeesh ... I wouldn't be asking my horses to jump a car. Imagine hitting legs on hard metal? Advanced cross country jumps are at least being made a tidge safer for horse and rider these days ...
ReplyDeleteExcellent riding is an understatement. Wow.
ReplyDeleteThe horse jumping the cars takes my breath away with his bravery.
WOW!!! Yes, absolutely BEAUTIFUL rider. She has better Eq with no saddle than most people using one. Very, very impressive - thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI am impressed with their talent - as well as their sense of fun.
ReplyDelete"....these two woman, Vicki and Amanda Wilson, epitomize the essence of the art of riding, I am greatly impressed by their skills and as such, the very idea of riding sans bridle and saddle clearly illustrates the intense connection they have with horses! I can only imagine the work that's invloved in creating this connection because it encompasses such a cross section of training and also the natural ability of these riders, the trust that they develop with their horses and well, I could go on and on. If I am correct in thinking that the Wilson sisters are based in NZ; well, I wanna pack my bags right now - LOL!
ReplyDeleteI am not a believer in bareback bridless riding as horses were not made to carry weight. The saddle was created to "protect" the horses back. If you watch both of these videos more carefully the rider is bouncing on the middle of the horses back. With each canter stride the riders bottom comes up and down. In dressage the seat in the canter moves with the hind leg of the horse creating a hula motion not a back and forth or up and down as is created in bareback riding. Just a different perspective.
ReplyDeleteWell, yeah, that's how we roll in NZ. No saddle, no problem.
ReplyDelete(But you couldn't pay me to do a bungy jump!)
Go NZ! The Wilson sisters are well-known as they are very hard working, do it all themselves and have had a lot of success. HOY is our biggest show. TTHL, this is their website: http://www.showtymhorses.co.nz/ and their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/showtymhorses. I wish I was an adolescent again; the camps they hold look amazing.
