Ri and I are working toward first level. I was intrigued by this video of Scott Hassler talking about engagement and transitions. Riley isn't much like this mare, but there were a few phrases I really liked, and he warned against being "too tactful" and urged the rider to "own it." I think that purposeful riding is something I should be aspiring to more, and this video helps me to envision it...

I love the philosophy behind this training. Pick a simple exercise that teaches the horse and works towards your goal. This is what I love about dressage.

ReplyDeleteI think you've come a long way as far as "owning it" goes. Until the recent competition season, all the videos I'd seen were of you poking along looking very timid. Then, kapow, you come out with all the comp videos looking like you meant it, with Riley genuinely forward and very much owning the arena. It was no surprise to read if your success over the season.

ReplyDeleteHi- Just ran across your blog and it caught my eye because I am in the process of getting my mare's canter. She is a very nervous mare as well and a long way from this horses training level, but I liked some of this trainers comments. Thanks for sharing this
