Featured in the Chronicle: Ship Shap, thoroughbred gelding owned by Hannah Taylor, having success in hunters at the bigger shows. Yeah!
A thoroughbred in hunters was no big deal in the seventies, eighties, and nineties, but you don't see it that much at the big shows any more. Kudos to Hannah and her Ship Shape!

Ship Shape -- A thoroughbred in the hunter ranks

That was one tricky Handy Hunter course. It really was a test of the horse's training and the rider's concentration. It looks like something I would have loved to ride on my hunter, Russell R., years ago--in the 70's and 80's. ( He too was a TB and a champion in over 150 shows over his career. As you note, back in the day, the TB was the star of the hunter classes.)
ReplyDeleteIs that how they do it nowadays?! No warm up circle and just screech to a halt at the out-gate? Wow--you can tell I am old. :)
ReplyDeleteI'd say that TB's are becoming more and more common in the Hunter Ring again. USHJA has recently added a rated division for TB's only, and at least at the A and AA shows in our area, TB's are well represented in the larger divisions and classes. I think the pendulum is starting to swing back in their favor (subjectively) and the USEF is doing a pretty remarkable job of encouraging their participation...
ReplyDeleteI don't know much about hunters, would that be considered a handy hunter round? Seemed pretty technical and then to have that trot fence in there too...
ReplyDelete*drool WOW, he is stunning! Definitely able to hold his own with a bunch of WBs. Of course, a TB is the only kind of horse I personally want and I have absolutely no idea why they ever went "out of fashion." :-)
