I don't think it's a fair comparison. If they were racing against each other, it would be a pretty interesting contest. Neither one of those horses faced much of a challenge in that race so neither was really laying it on the line.
I totally agree with Liz. Pharoah did run the last quarter than Secretariat, but even that doesn't prove anything. The pace was different in each race. Who's to say what would happen if these two champions challenged each other. Who would push the pace? Who would have the stamina? I tend to be a big Secretariat fan, but Pharoah has Secretariat in his breeding so we'll never know how much of that incredible talent and speed he inherited.
It's a fun comparison, but totally impossible to prove anything. The fact stands that Secretariat ran the race faster and his record has yet to be broken. Pharoah will probably never run a 12 furlong race again, so there's no way to tell if he could run that distance faster.
I agree with Liz to a point, but their times were close enough, within 2-3 seconds at the 3/4, mile, mile 1/4 and finish, that it would be an interesting race. Although one we will never see...
